Learning French Grades 1 to 12

Learning French Grades 1 - 12

Primary French (Grades 1 to 3)

We are one of only a few boards in Ontario that offers a comprehensive French as a Second Language (FSL) program for students in Grades 1 to 3. Your child will receive 60 hours of French language instruction each year. This works out to be approximately 40 minutes every second day or 20 minutes a day. This gives our students a clear head-start in acquiring French as second language.

Junior and Intermediate (Grades 4 to 8)

Every year, students will progress in their French language learning. By Grades 7and 8 every student will receive on average 40 minutes of French language instruction each day - for a total of 120 hours per year. This will provide your child with a solid foundation to pursue French as a second language throughout high school.

French in High School

With asolid base after eight years at the elementary level, our high school students are ready to become immersed in a high-level of FSL learning. We encourage students to pursue FSL studies at the secondary level. Our nine high schools offer French courses in Grades 9 through 12. Students must obtain at least one credit in French as a second language in order to graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Reading, writing and oral communication in French will continue to be a focus at the high school level.
